The Special Olympics of Arizona and Troon Country Club are teaming up to put on their annual Tennis Fun Day event tomorrow, January 25 at 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
During Tennis Fun Day, Special Olympics athletes are given the chance to learn the basics of tennis through clinics and exhibitions put on by local tennis professionals. Low compression balls are used, and the net height is adjusted for the event. After the clinics, athletes get to attend a post-event awards luncheon. Each is given a gold medal for participation, as well as a free tennis racquet and t-shirt. There will also be a fire truck on display by the Scottsdale Fire Department.
Troon tennis director Mark Pachtner expressed his enjoyment at seeing the Special Olympians learn the ins and outs of tennis, a game they aren’t normally exposed to. Some are even able to rally back and forth by the end, according to Pachtner. His ultimate goal is for the kids to be able to continue playing on their own.
Tennis Fun Day is a fundraiser for the Special Olympics of Arizona that is held at Troon Country Club every year.
