The recently opened Brown’s Ranch Trailhead, located in the northern region of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve near Troon North, has been the talk of the town since its debut in October. Hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and dog walkers are flocking to the popular new hub to access a vast network of new and existing trails. Among these is the new Jane Rau Interpretive Trail, named after one of the co-founders of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.
The trail was dubbed in Rau’s honor for her tireless efforts to protect the lands now encompassed within the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Much of the land accessed through the Brown’s Ranch Trailhead is full of rich history, and like the rest of the Preserve, it is home to many diverse species of flora and fauna. The Jane Rau Interpretive Trail is a short, simple loop that is accessible to hikers of all skill levels and features several educational exhibits.
Another popular trail that is accessed through the Brown’s Ranch Trailhead involves an invigorating 2.7-mile climb up to the top of Brown’s Mountain. From here you can view the site and remaining structures of the historical Brown’s Ranch below. When you are ready to return to the trailhead, you can close up the loop with a 1.5-mile stretch back, or you can return the way you came for a longer hike. There are also several options for scenic detours you can take on your way to Brown’s Mountain, depending on how far you want to hike.
If you enjoy spending time in the beautiful outdoors and haven’t already been to the Brown’s Ranch Trailhead, it’s definitely worth a visit. There are also numerous other access points to the preserve that are close to the Troon area. Troon is one of the best places in Scottsdale to experience the wonders of the Sonoran Desert.
